 Welcome to Sustainable Pettinain 150-Club

We would like to invite you to join the Sustainable Pettinain 150-Club, an activity that will help put Sustainable Pettinain on a more secure financial footing and give 3 lucky members a return on their entry money.

This sounds interesting, can you provide me with more detail please?

The 150-Club will be set-up as private society lottery.  As a charitable body we are allowed to run a private society lottery to raise funds. Subscribers will be allocated a number that is entered into a monthly draw. This will generate a pot of money. 40% of the pot will be used to offer a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize to subscribers. The other 60% will be retained by Sustainable Pettinain to build a capital base to help meet unexpected bills, or to support new projects, or to help with bigger funding applications for community projects where we have to generate match funding….ultimately benefitting the whole of the community whilst giving something immediately back to the lucky winners.

Here is an example:
  • 100 people subscribe to the 150-Club, @ £10 per month.
  • This generates monthly a pot of £1000.
  • 3 lucky winners are selected randomly each month to share 40% of the pot, £400.

  • The 1st prize winner wins 20% of the pot - £200
  • The 2nd prize winner wins 15% of the pot - £150
  • The 3rd prize winner wins 5% of the pot - £50.
  • Sustainable Pettinain SCIO receives £600, which over a year could raise a whopping £7200!

To participate you must be over 16. So if you are, to receive more detail about this activity please register for the 150-Club here through our events channel. This does not commit you, but allows us to securely hold your contact details and email you more detail about how to participate. It is important you tick the box indicating we may contact you with more information!

As the  150-Club lottery is set-up we will be adding more details to this page, but below are the answers to some questions you may have.

What if you don’t get 150 people?

There are ~ 150 households in the Pettinain community. So if one member (over 16) in every household chooses to join we will have 150 people! (but we would welcome more!).

However, this is not an activity limited to one subscription per household, but rather is linked to an individual. So maybe all members of a household would like individually to be part of this, or maybe some households would choose not to.

It is fully scalable and the table below shows an example of a £10 monthly subscription and a different number of subscribers:
Number of subscribers Odd of winning Pot size 1st prize 2nd prize 3rd prize Monthly to SP Annual to SP
100 3 in 100 £1,000 £200 £100 £50 £650 £7,800
200 3 in 200 £2,000 £400 £200 £100 £1,300 £15,600
50 3 in 50 £500 £100 £50 £25 £325 £3,900
76 3 in 76 £760 £152 £76 £38 £494 £5,928
126 3 in 126 £1,260 £252 £126 £63 £819 £9,828
26 3 in 26 £260 £52 £26 £13 £169 £2,028
We need 10 members to ensure that the prize money for any winner is more than the monthly subscription. However, even with a small number of subscribers (see the example above for 26 subscribers) Sustainable Pettinain SCIO still gets over £2000 per year extra support.
£10 a month is quite a lot...can it be for less, or can I pay less?

£10 a month is only £2.50 per week. There is not much can be bought for this nowadays. For example:

  • A pint of beer / glass of wine average cost was ~ £4.40 / £4.80 in 2024
  •  A Euromillions ticket is £2.50 (with the odds of winning here are 1 in 139,838,160, whereas this 150-Club is likely to be no poorer than 3 in 200)
  • A Costa Coffee large latte is £4.40
  • The average price of a packet of cigarettes is ~ £15

Everyone who is a subscriber has to pay the same amount for it to be fair (a winner paying less would be unfair).

If the overwhelming feedback that £10 a month is too much then we could consider a lesser amount.

However we do need to work for financial security for the SCIO and volunteer time has to be used as efficiently as possible, so £10 a month subscription helps with this. And a smaller suscription means smaller prize money...

Is this not gambling? I don’t agree with gambling.

This is gambling, but the funds raised are being ploughed directly back into your community and unlike many other lotteries the odds of winning are high so more benefit to players.

Unlike betting on sporting fixtures, or with an online app, a person can only spend a maximum of £10 per month, and so this is not an activity typical of those that contributes to societal problems than can arise through gambling.

Sustainable Pettinain is a registered charitable organisation and the gambling commission allows charities to raise funding using such lotteries. We will be running a small society lottery and doing this will be registered with South Lanarkshire Council.

Ok, so you are trying to raise money for a good cause of benefit to me, you are not breaking the law and there is a chance with time I will win some money – of course I am interested! How do I subscribe?

Ok first, all participants must be over 16! If you are read on.
Please register interest so that we can email you with more specific detail once we have registered with South Lanarkshire Council to run a small society lottery.

We will ask you to register interest using our hall booking system and have set up an 'event' for this. We are using this approach as it securely holds your personal data and generates a group email for us. If you have not previously booked the hall or bought event tickets you will have to register as a new user - but this is a quick and simple process!
